He replaces Eric Vroom, who resigned from USA Rugby last month, after just one season as CEO.
Flutie will also be a representative of USA Rugby at the World Rugby Council in Italy later this month. It’s a role that has been filled by other board members before, including Linda Howells, who also fills a similar role at World Rugby.
"USA Rugby is looking forward to his joining our board and his experience will be extremely valuable in supporting USA Rugby’s programs as they continue to grow," said CEO Dave Caldwell in a statement. "He will also bring a great deal of enthusiasm for the sport to the board."

“USA Rugby’s Board of Governors has asked me to join them at their annual meeting in Italy in November,” said Flutie. “I am very much looking forward to being a part of USA Rugby’s continued growth. I have a strong connection to the sport and USA Rugby is a great partner. My wife, Lora, and I will be traveling to New York City from our home in Florida in November for the USA Rugby Board of Governors Meeting.”
Flutie's comments came following a Thursday meeting with USA Rugby that included players and club coaches.
"USA Rugby is committed to ongoing support for its athlete and coaches,” said Greg McRitchie, USAR's executive director. “Our players and coaches look forward to his leadership during this critical time as we work with the National Governing Body for our sport to ensure that USA Rugby has the best possible environment for its members.”
Flutie was part of USA Rugby’s leadership group following the World Cup this summer and said he plans to help develop the sport’s business strategies. He also said that he is a big fan of the United States national teams.
